A:
The length of the cloth tape is the same and the teeth are the same. The only difference is the slider. The purse zipper slider does not have a locking mechanism and can be opened simply by pulling on each side of the zipper. The jean zipper, however, does have a locking mechanism and will unlock when the zipper pull is lifted.

A coat that has a separating zipper, separates, while zipped? Does it need to be replaced or are there any tricks that my save this zipper. I thought about spraying with silicone spray...wondering if this would help? Thanks in advance.

A:
It sounds as if the teeth on the zipper are not locking like they should. The zipper will need to be replaced.

How do I make a zipper shorter?

A:
First you must determine whether you are shortening a separating or a non-separating zipper. To shorten a separating zipper, work the slider to the bottom of the zipper. Using needle nose pliers, remove the 2 top stops. Using end nippers, shorten the zipper to the desired size by making a small cut between the teeth or across the coils on both sides of the zipper. Remove the excess zipper tape with scissors. Apply two new top stops and sew zipper into the article of clothing. To shorten a non-separating zipper, work the slider to the top of the zipper. Why do the Brass pant zippers only have 1 top stop on 1 side of the zipper?

A:
This is the way the zipper is made. The additional top stop would not be necessary for this zipper. It’s considered a “fly” zipper and sine it’s in the “flies” of pants, it’s not something that most people would even notice as being missing. YKK also make a 4.5 brass jacket zipper. This zipper would have 2 top stops, but that is only because some people might think it was missing, otherwise only 1 top stop would be necessary for this zipper as well.
