Why won’t the barcodes scan on my thermal paper?

There can be several reasons why a barcode could scan poorly: 1. The customer could have a new conventional 1D barcode scanner that they have not set up to read their barcode. They usually only come preprogrammed with the most basic barcode types and the rest have to be put in the scanner via a barcode read by the scanner that is provided in the instruction manual. Also the barcode guns may malfunction and reset themselves back to factory setting which would make it lose all the codes the customer or whoever setup the system had put in. If this happens they will have to reenter their barcode type for the gun. 2. The barcode is printed poorly. If there are too many defects in the barcode it may not read. Also if there is a scratch on the thermal printer in may shave the barcode in a plate that may keep it from reading or cause in to produce the wrong number. Make sure to clean the thermal head regularly to help create the cleanest possible image. 3. Color of the paper. If the paper/ink color is too dark it may interfere with the barcode reading or keep it from reading all together. Also if the paper may be on the edge of too dark and is in a dark setting this may also interfere with the white substrate showing through from behind. The scanner uses red light to reflect the image and senses the white and black parts of the barcode. If the paper is too dark it will not be able to differentiate. Sometimes moving the scanner back so it is not overshadowing the barcode can help with scanning depending on the type of scanner. 4. The density (how close the bars are together) of the barcode may be different depending on how tight of a space the user needs it in. The distance of the scanner will have to be adjusted to read the barcode. Closer with smaller and further for larger.

The manufacture has several winders they use to convert the paper from a jumbo roll into the final product. Some of the machines use the tape seal, and some use a glue system. They are all from the same place.

Why do my receipts fade and how can I prevent this?

You might have noticed that many retailers are getting rid of ink printers and replacing them with faster, less expensive thermal ones. To print a thermal receipt, a heated stylus passes over thermal paper, which is coated in a chemical that darkens when heated. Unfortunately, the chemical layer remains active after the receipt is produced, so it's sensitive to light, heat, friction, abrasives and plastics, and can fade or darken quickly. For the best chance of keeping thermal receipts legible for a few years, you need to store them correctly: -Don't store receipts in plastic sleeves. -Do store receipts away from heat and light. -But sometimes there's not much that can be done to prevent the decay. -Ultimately, the best way of keeping thermal receipts is to make a copy of them.

At this time, per our manufacturer, our paper is not completely free of phenol. We can guarantee that it is BPA free, but not BPS free.

Why would the print on the Thermal Paper be lighter than normal?

The paper isn’t treated, the image is “burned” into the paper by the thermal head of the printer. The age and cleanliness of the thermal head effect the shade of the image.

Why is it that I have extra paper left on the thermal rolls (RCT)?

We have learned that a small percentage of printers have an "end of roll sensor" that reads the outside of the honeycomb core and thinks it is reading the end of the roll. Once this happens it does not allow the machine to advance any more paper. We know that some Citizen printers have this type of sensor. I believe there are others but we very rarely get reports of this. Putting a piece of tape over the sensor so that it would not read the core may take care of the problem.

Why is the print on my Thermal Paper poor?

There may be an easy way to remedy poor print and make it easier to scan barcodes. Every time a thermal roll is placed in a printer, the printer head should be cleaned. We carry a Thermal Head Cleaner Pen (RCTPEN) which you would rub against the head of the printer. This allows the printer to burn a crisper image into the paper. Also, Epson printers have dip switched on the bottom of the printers which allow you to increase the heat settings and dpi settings on the printer which should provide a darker and clearer image . However, if the thermal head is worn from heavy use, the printer will need to be repaired.

What is the life expectancy on the thermal paper?

If stores in a dark place with relative humidity of 45-65 % and a temperature below 77F degrees the paper should last for at least 3 years. If there is a printed image on the paper, the image will regain legible for up to 7 years under normal filing conditions.
