What causes a wedding gown to “yellow”?

A:
The dyes used in making up the wedding gown’s fabric include certain forms of acids. After awhile the dyes will start to break down and release these acids which will cause the fabric to “yellow”. To help prevent “yellowing” it is recommended that the wedding gowns be stuffed with acid free tissue paper and check in an acid free or acid neutral box.

A:
Tape is not recommended to seal the box. In time, tape will lose its adhesive qualities and will stain the box.

When preserving wedding gowns, should the boxes be sealed with a plastic bag?

A:
Most people agree textiles should not be stored in plastic bags. Plastic will hold in moisture that the garment contains, which increases the risk of damage caused by mildew. The garment should be kept so that the material can “breath”. Ideally, it should not be kept in a damp or overly dry place. Plastic bags as they start to breakdown may also give off a gas, which could cause further harm to the material. Plastic bags, however, would be beneficial in offering some protection from outdoor elements, before the box reaches its final destination.
